Petra spent last week visiting me in Lexington. We experienced a serious icestorm last Tuesday night. School was delayed Wednesday morning, so we drove up part of the Blue Ridge Parkway to survey the situation. Fallen limbs obstructed the road and eventually blocked our passage. We continued on foot. The wind come up suddenly, with gusts reaching 60 miles per hour. Trees starting falling. After a close shave with a mean spirited tree top, Petra and I ran for the car. It felt like we were under fire. Gettysburg itself could scarcely have been louder.

Hey Paul! Those pictures are amazing!!! How gorgeous! You two certainly are adventurous. We had snow and then ice here, so the ice part wasn't as beautiful, but hey--who's complaining? Three snow days and a delay made for a restful week. :)

it was an awesome day. too bad classes were only canceled for the morning. I'd have loved a three day HVA style break

Last Thursday, I went for a walk in the woods behind the law school. The wind came up, and I started noticing that the trees seemed weakened by the ice storm. sure enough, two 60 foot pines fell within 50 feet of me. I started to run, but stopped when I heard a large "crack" overhead. a huge limb (probably 300 pounds) fell 15 feet in front of me.
who'd have thought that a walk in the woods could be so interesting.
