Ice Storm

Petra spent last week visiting me in Lexington. We experienced a serious icestorm last Tuesday night. School was delayed Wednesday morning, so we drove up part of the Blue Ridge Parkway to survey the situation. Fallen limbs obstructed the road and eventually blocked our passage. We continued on foot. The wind come up suddenly, with gusts reaching 60 miles per hour. Trees starting falling. After a close shave with a mean spirited tree top, Petra and I ran for the car. It felt like we were under fire. Gettysburg itself could scarcely have been louder.

Petra took all the pictures--with my powershot SD 600. My name should be distanced from the photo credits:-)
I'm proud to be marrying an adventurous girl who enjoys a bit of danger now and then.
Petra is in change of wedding invites, but, as far as I'm concerned, you're all welcome:-) I think the details will be published soon.

May this adventure be a foretaste of your marriage: adventurous, exciting, and dangerous enough to bring you ever closer together.

Amen!

Looks awesome! Adventures are great :D. I hope you guys had a good time together. Sounds like you did :). Quite some snow has melted away over here now, but thankfully it's going to snow all week now. I hope you'll have a great week Paul.

(I think Tee is going to post a little on her blog soon about our great mountain adventures this last Sunday (going up a 5600 feet snowy mountain!) - so, stay tuned there!)

I fear global warming is cutting back on our snow fall...

I look forward to hearing about Norge adventures.

Paul! Glad to see you back into the blogging spirit! Yes I will try and type an epistle on our Norge adventures, but at the moment I need to study :-P Awesome pictures to Petra, I'm sure you had a blast! Happy belated Chinese New year!

The photos are absolutely breathtaking. Good eye, Petra. I've never experienced an ice storm. It is hard for me to imagine. Such dangerous beauty!

Hey Paul! Those pictures are amazing!!! How gorgeous! You two certainly are adventurous. We had snow and then ice here, so the ice part wasn't as beautiful, but hey--who's complaining? Three snow days and a delay made for a restful week. :)

I apologize for sounding like a recording of the comments before me, but these pictures are absolutely amazing, especially the last two. Glad you were able to enjoy it and stay safe :)

You have a Camara that takes photos? That's pretty cool.

Paul said...

Yep, I've got a Camara. My photos usually look pretty lame, but Petra has some skills.

it was an awesome day. too bad classes were only canceled for the morning. I'd have loved a three day HVA style break

Fantastic photos! Wish I could have been there.

Paul said...

you would have enjoyed it.

and yes angryman, I can't spell:-)

seems like one of the other semi intelligent folks who commented earlier ought to have pointed this out...

Paul,
You have a devoted band of "commenters". I intend to follow the crowd and leave you a comment. Your description of falling trees reminds me of working in the jungle.

John and Alex:

Thanks for taking the time to comment on my blog. I wish I could come down and visit you guys, but all my free time seems to be tied up in Denmark...

Last Thursday, I went for a walk in the woods behind the law school. The wind came up, and I started noticing that the trees seemed weakened by the ice storm. sure enough, two 60 foot pines fell within 50 feet of me. I started to run, but stopped when I heard a large "crack" overhead. a huge limb (probably 300 pounds) fell 15 feet in front of me.
who'd have thought that a walk in the woods could be so interesting.
